ASK THE EXPERTS with Suzy Elneil and Dr Sarah Jarvis

What should the first step be if women suspect they have LAI?

Many women are able to manage the problem day-to-day with the use of a good specialist product, by doing pelvic floor exercises or relaxation techniques but in many cases it can be treated so speak to your GP about it or contact your local continence clinic. There are over 360 NHS continence clinics across the UK with specialist teams providing support and medical advice. You can contact many of these clinics directly for a consultation.Take a look at www.bladderandbowelfoundation.org/continence-clinic-directory to find your local clinic. You don't need to live with it. After all, if you woke up every day with a headache which stopped you enjoying your life you would see a doctor, and the same can be said for light adult incontinence. Ask your GP or go to a continence clinic for more help and advice. Remember you are not the only woman with this problem, it is very common.
